Less than one year since releasing her critically-acclaimed sophomore album CTRL, SZA's popularity is on an exponential upward curve. Her sold-out arena tour and huge hit single are testaments to this fact; thus when she arrived in Los Angeles for her inaugural headlining show since CTRL's release, the excitement and expectation were palpable.
The crowd was absolutely mesmerized as they showered their queen with deafening cheers and powerful sing-alongs from the get go. Her powerful yet pure voice filled up every auditorium as her performance left everyone speechless - her band was also outstanding!
SZA's stage production was grander than her star power, filling Madison Garden with captivating visuals from start to finish. From her captivating self portrait in the ocean that perfectly accompanied her melodic vocals on PSA -- to float on a diving board while onscreen images of shipwrecks and underwater scenes were projected above her -- to floating above audiences on an inflatable lifeboat suspended above them for slower songs such as Supermodel and Special -- her stage presence left the Garden spellbound from start to finish. At one point during her performance she revealed an illuminated lighthouse that left an unforgettable visual impact!
SZA is not only an expert at R&B and neo soul music, but she knows how to tell a tale through song. Her effortless segways between songs kept the show pulsing with energy; never wasteful with her time! In tribute to Erykah Badu she gave an intoxicating cover of Bag Lady that left all in attendance spellbound and then ended it all with an empowering rendition of Open Arms which had everyone singing along!
